The John Muir Trail by Elizabeth Wenk

While on the JMT, most days we found we were far too exhausted to read. By the end of our fifth day, however, we were perusing the John Muir Trail book each evening and often while taking breaks. The book offered fantastic details about the trail ahead, campsites and water sources we might find, the geology along the way and the wildlife we could expect to see on our hike. It also provided a fantastic summary of the history of the trail and the people and organizations that made it possible. Though we carried maps with us, this book was worth the extra weight and we highly recommend any future JMT hiker to bring it along!
